I've been having problems lately with my computer, it keeps making some sort of drilling noise... now I'm fairly new to fiddling about with the insides of my computer, I can install Ram and Cdroms but that's my limit....

The noises seems to be coming from my cpu fan but it's seems to be working fine.......

Also my computer has stopped detecting my cdwriter :( plus the cdrom doesn't get detected 1 out of 3 times.... I think I'm having conflicts with my hardware.

I'm really hoping that there's some really clued up people who know about computers and so on.

My computer to make things worse is a Packard Bell. <_< :( :(

It sounds like your sound card is conflicting with your drives.

Check that the small wire from your cd writer is plugged in to the sound card securely.

Also if you have just installed the writer or been tinkering, make sure the
"Little pegs" in the back of both the cd rom and the writer are in the correct position. If not, then it is trying to use both of them as default.

I rarely get the tapping noise if ive got too many big programs open at once, and the cpu is telling me to get stuffed.

Ctl - Alt - Del usually works !!!

Cool I've just sorted out the noise problem, it was dust building up and now I've got rid of the dust it's now back to it's old self, and I'm pleased that it's detecting the cdrom alot more now but still won't detect the cdwriter... :( I really hope to get that sorted out though. Eventually.

I am still having problems with my cdwriter but this time it detects it but when I put a cd in it doesn't do anything but stratch it.

It's asthough it's trying to work, it scratches the cd near the hole. :( lucky I don't put audio cd's in there.

Well, quite obviously, if CD's are getting scratched then they're rubbing against something, i'd find out what it you can (open the drawer and get a torch?)

I think it's due to the cold conditions of my room that my computer is proper screwed. :( although good news is that my cdrom and cdwriter are now being detected....

I hope the problem fixes itself soon.

Do you know any good places to get cdwriters cheap? PC World are a big rip off and the cdwriter I bought before was a 'Freecom' I bought it online for about ?100 and now they're about ?50 bloody typical!.

Would be nice to get a new one for about ?20 or ?30....

Try Bardwells on London Road.
Failing that, try Aladdins Cave, on Leppings Lane.
The Blokes a bit of a Tosser, with Gravy down his Shirt, and bad breath.
But his prices are right enough.

Well basically speed doesn't matter as I burn on the lowest speed setting....

But any help is very much appreciated, it doesn't look as though my cd writer will work again... problem is one of the screws is stuck in there keeping the cdwriter kept in place and it won't come out cos it's worn away.... :(

Okay another problem, my floppy drive won't put things onto floppy disk I have two floppy drives and both are the same it says something about write protection but I know it isn't that!, it's strange that both my cd writer and floppy drives {one not being connected to the computer aswell} are both screwed...... I'm wondering if it's the hard drive.... any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

when was the last time your hard drive was formated?

If you look on the back of all your drives, you will see three prongs. Read the info that came with your writer to see which way these should be set. If they are set wrong, all your drives will conflict.

I formatted my drive about a month of so ago because I was having loads of probs with cdrom, cdwriter and floppy drive... I kept formatting it, reinstalling windows 98 but it didn't make much difference.

As for my floppy drive it's been connected like that since I got it... but recently I have messed about with it trying to get it right so maybe I've screwed it up slightly, I'll have a look sometime when I can motivate myself to do it.

Thanks for the help.

I have uploaded a backup tool into our downloads database. Its easy, but make sure you backup regularly, or it won't be of any use.
